Artist StatementSince I was a young girl I have always had a fascination with fiber. My earliest expressions were always in the form of clothing so that either my dolls or I could wear my fabric conquests. As a young teenager my focus broadened to quilts. I fell in love with the idea of tradition and that just as I had cherished my family quilts someday someone would cherish mine. Over the years my traditional quilts have evolved into quilted fiber art collages. I began learning to hand dye fabric so that I could create shades and colors that were not readily available in local fabric shops. I experimented with tie-dye and shibori techniques. My first pieces outside of the traditional were still somewhat geometric yet abstract. Those first pieces were mainly just to showcase the fabric that I was so proud of creating. My current work has shifted gears into more figurative subjects. I use raw edge appliqué techniques and then give the piece definition and strength through free motion quilting. I find the process of creating these collages both soothing and meditative. I am always excited to see what direction my art will take as I evolve and learn new things. Cheryl Sterling-
